NaNoWriMo

National Novel Writing Month is all about writing a full novel in a month. "Bob" is my project. Who knows how far it'll go, but I feel like I'm living a life long dream of writing for a living. Read his story and enjoy my writing journey!

Chapter Four - Eugene Benbrook

Edgeview Elementary had had the same principal since its door opened in 1987. Principal Eugene Benbrook.

Eugene Benbrook had always wanted to own an ice cream truck. He spent long summer days imagining who he would drive from neighborhood to neighborhood. The excited children would come to him once they heard the magic music from his ice cream truck.

He would be a king of kings.

That dream lasted as long as an ice cream cone on the fourth of July.

“You’ll only make money half of the year,” his mother told him one day. “What will you do during the winter?”

“Well,” Eugene said thoughtfully. “I figure I’ll work with Santa for the rest of the year.”

“And get pooped on by reindeer,” his mother screeched. “Not likely!”
Eugene Benbrook’s dreams were crushed. For years he thought of every other job possible.

Astronaut? No, he was scared of heights.

Policeman? No, he couldn’t stand the thought of doughnuts every day.

Veterinarian? Eww, animals were way too messy.

Eventually, he settled into a profession that many choose, not because they can’t do anything else, but because he wanted to make kids happy. Eugene Benbrook became a principal.

The halls of Edgeview Elementary school were plastered in bright colors in the early years. Every classroom had its own art supplies and even twenty-seven different colors of glitter.

If there was one man who knew how to plan for art, it was Principal Eugene Benbrook.

Life was good at Edgeview in the early years.

That is until Charlie Lambert’s pet hamster, Gizmo, got out during the science fair.
